Gravenhurst FoodCycler

A new food waste diversion device has recently been introduced to the Town of Gravenhurst.

The Town of Gravenhurst has partnered with FoodCycle science to offer an in-home food waste diversion solution. This is a pilot project where residents purchase the FoodCycler at a subsidized cost. The device helps divert food waste for a 12-week period and tracks the amount.

Waste diversion is the process of diverting solid waste from landfills by reusing, recycling, composting, or other methods that keep materials from being sent to landfills. It's a key part of a circular economy and helps minimize the environmental impact of solid waste. As previously examined, circular economy helps to significantly reduce waste and increases overall sustainability of the planet.

The FoodCycler is a closed-loop indoor compost alternative that speeds up the natural decomposition process through aerobic digestion of waste. It dries and grinds food waste into a dry, odorless nutrient-rich by-product that is significantly reduced in weight and volume from its unprocessed state. The product is free from bacteria, weed seeds, and food-borne pathogens that are eliminated during the process.

Up to 50% of household waste is composed of food waste. Although the programs are not open to residents outside the municipality, this town-wide solution represents a significant technological advancement and a step towards the reduction of food waste. As Gravenhurst addresses food waste, other areas may be inspired to create their own technological solutions to decrease the amount of food waste, and ultimately reduce the impact humans have on the environment
